Would You Fall For That?

Would You Fall For That

There is a new show on ABC this season called "Would You Fall For That?"  It is an interesting concept in that is shows that most people fall for what's known as the "herd effect".   People tend to follow, or believe things that are presented to them with authority or that others around them are believing.

In one test they took a nine year old girl who had never painted on a canvas before and had her paint some "artworks".    They put her paintings on display.  They then created lots of social proof to convince people that they were looking a fine art.  If they had hung the pictures in an elementary school people would have assumed they were done by an elementary student.

Since these paintings were hung in a Soho art gallery people made the assumption that they were created by a very creative artist.

People "fall" for it.  They believe they are done by an artistic genius.  People are serious impressed by her artwork.  A man said he was willing to pay $26,000.00 for a canvas with a circle on it. Most people "fell" for it hook, line, and sinker.

There are many experiments and it is hard to believe that people "fall for" them.

Do You "Fall" For It Every Day?

Are food manufacturer's are convincing us on a daily basis that they have our best interests at heart.  They get "authorities" to go on television commercials and tell us how great the food they have manufactured are.

They find cheaper ways to make the foods by adding chemicals to them and then they convince us that these foods are great tasting and healthy for us.  The chemicals do things like enhance the taste or appearance of food and preventing spoilage.  They can put things on the shelf for long periods of time and they don't spoil.

There is an estimate that over 10,000 chemicals are allowed in human food.  Of course, theses are all determined to be "safe".

There are three ways a food manufacturer can get clearance to add a chemical to it's products.

  • Self determination, by the manufacturer.
  • Petition the FDA
  • Notification  (from 2006 to 2010  97% of the chemicals were cleared through the FDA using this method.)
In addition to chemicals, they have added more and more sugar to the products as the years go by.  They have also added High Fructose Corn Syrup to many food products.

Do you really want to "fall"  into the herd and just accept whatever you're told?

How about making a choice for real food?

Would you fall for that

Real food is simple.  It is just foods that grow or have been alive.

Your best choices in real foods:

Fruits and vegetables, preferably from local farmer's markets or from organic grocers or just grow your own.

Grass fed or locally grown meats, such as, beef, chicken, and pork.

Milk, and Cheese.

Eggs, Wild-caught seafood, and Nuts.

What's your choice?

I am trying to make my choices for real foods.  It is difficult to buy all non processed foods.  I live in an area where local foods aren't grown year round.  It is also more expensive to buy some of the real foods.  I am trying to make a permanent change away from the "herd" effect and make the best choices for myself.
